Check Your Blood Pressure and Your Oil

With all the advances in medical technology, it sounds like getting a physical will be more like getting a tune-up. According to articles in 42 international medical journals, led by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and the British Medical journal (BMJ), here are some of the things we can expect post Y2K:

- We'll have toilets that weigh us and analyze our urine for bacteria and sugar levels, then modem the results to our physician each day.

- People will have sensors implanted capable of performing over 40 lab tests.

- "Smart" pacemakers will monitor blood oxygen levels and cardiac wall pressure so they can adjust the heart rate on a moment-to-moment basis.

- Diabetics can have sensor implants to monitor glucose levels and supply insulin from internal reservoirs. (It is thought that God might steal that idea and call his invention something silly like a pancreas.)

- People going blind will have biochip photosensors implanted in theeyes to act as artificial retinas.

- And there is a prediction that within 25 years it will be possible to grow artificial penises and vaginas for worn out or disfigured (private) parts.

In addition to internal technological aids and enhancements, doctors and scientists are predicting a variety of advancements.

- Wheelchairs are being developed that can climb stairs and navigate surfaces like sand and gravel.

- Portable intensive care beds able to monitor vital signs and deliver ventilation will replace ICU's.

- Doctors will use "electronic noses" to sniff out ear, nose and throat infections.

- Ceiling vents in hospitals will automatically screen visitors for infections that may be transmittable to patients.

- And when the human genome is finally mapped and decoded, doctors will be able to forecast each person's future health problems. Armed with this knowledge, personalized health treatments can be prepared in advance.

Perhaps the most controversial development is xenotransplantation -- in English, organ transplants to humans from animals like pigs and primates. While the technology is advancing in this area, there are ethical and moral issues that will influence when or whether these practices will be implemented.

There is no question that technology is making great strides in the medical arena. The question, at least for this writer, is what does it really mean. My acupuncturist, Dr. Yue Jin Feng, MD, OMD, expresses it this way, "Science may conquer disease, but it will not produce health." Having good health is up to each person based on the choices they make. Maybe science can help, but, ultimately, it's still going to be up to us.

PRACTICAL SPIRITUALITY ---
"Discussions on Integrating Spiritual Consciousness with Professional Work and Daily Life" Moderated by Laren Bright, writer, spiritual counselor.

Excerpt: There seems to be growing awareness of the value of a "spirituality component" in all areas of life. In addition to the usual crew of meditators, cult fanatics and health food/alternative
healing nuts, (I would probably be classified in all three categories)spirituality is creeping into the consciousness of a larger group, including bigwigs in corporate business.

MOVEMENT THERAPY:
"Exploring Your Potential and Health Through Movement"
Moderated by Stephaney, NiaDance Instructor

Excerpt: We are all dancers! Dance and movement is natural to the universe, and can be performed by anyone, no formal dance training is required. It is an outer expression of our inner spirit. That said, I invite you all to participate in the "choreography" of this forum. Lets explore dance as ritual, dance as celebration, and dance as a healing tonic. Lets dance to release self-imposed boundaries, fire our vitality and revive our energy; the energy which day to day living can deplete. Now I would like to pose a question: When was the last time you danced as if no one was watching?

Adventures In Eatin': "THE SCIENCE Of SEED MILK"
By Gail Kennedy

Almond Milk

Soak: 1 cup of raw organic almonds for 12 hours in pure water.

Drain and rinse well

In a blender or Vitamix: blend 1 part almonds to 3 parts pure water for 3-5 minutes

Strain the liquid through a chinoise strainer (or nylon mesh strainer from a paint store - perfectly safe, functional, and inexpensive) into a glass container and cover. This can be stored for up to three days; otherwise, blend and drink immediately at room temperature.

Preparing seeds this way means there is less chance for their vital nutrients, enzymes, and life force to be lost (as they would in heating). Plus the essential fatty acids in seeds and nuts support healthy immune function and help keep the body in balance all year long.

About Gail Kennedy:
Gail has been writing feature articles about Spa Cuisine and developing recipes for the Healthy Eating section of Healing Retreats & Spa Magazine since 1997. Currently she functions as a private fitness chef & healthy lifestyle coach, creating the daily meals of a private home, retreat, or event(s). Health Byte: "FOR BETTER OR WORT"

A study by researchers in Germany concludes that hypericum extract is safer and as effective as the drug imipramine, in treating people with moderate depression. Hypericum occurs naturally in the herb St. John's Wort. The study found the incidence of side effects was similar in hypericum and a placebo, but more frequent with the drug. It is thought that since the extract is more easily tolerated than the drug, patient compliance may be better. However, it was noted that doctors often prefer to prescribe chemically formulated drugs than herbal extracts. The study was conducted on 263 patients undergoing treatment for moderate depression, and was reported in the British Medical Journal.

The Six Million Dollar Man...um Person
By Laren Bright

When I read the article about what medicine and technology may have in store for us in the future (see elsewhere in this newsletter) I started thinking of the *real* possibilities. It doesn't take a crystal ball (or glass ovary) to guess at what we might expect in the coming years.

For example, maybe scientists could come up with a little mechanism that would pump oxygen rich fluids around the body through a series of little tubes. They could call their invention the Health Enhancing Aqueous Recirculator Thing or H.E.A.R.T. for short.

And what if they came up with this little computer-like device that would process data and determine possible outcomes. Why, they could even add a couple little cameras, noise sensors, and a speaker for sound. They could call this goodie the Bi-camera Reasoning And Intelligence Network.

For releasing processed liquid waste (and other fluids) in male bodies, perhaps scientists could devise a tube-like device and call it the Pleasure Enhancing Nub of Intense Sensation. My only concern is that this device might require so much energy to function, it may disable other of men's bodily processors, like the computer device.

What if they came up with a gizmo for dispensing bodily nutrients in a form that was even more healing and nourishing than the component food and drink the person took in. *If* such a thing was possible, I suggest it only be given to people who can bear babies. It could be called the Baby Refreshment Energy And Supply Terminal.

To power these things, there would need to be some special energy. It should be profoundly powerful, yet not easy to tamper with. To avoid problems with microwaves and airport radar detectors, it would be cool if the power was something other than electric. And of course the supply would have to be such that it couldn't run out; a Limitless Output Vivifying Energizer. It could be filtered through a special mechanism for maximum gain. That would be the Source Of Unlimited Lifeforce. All the power would be under the purview of a central machine that could reach and have a presence in every person. This would be the Great Operating Driver.

Maybe these ideas are just idle musings. Then again, maybe not. We'll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, have faith. Science is doing amazing things these days.
