Indonesia, "Top Spa Destination"
The Spa Association predicts
that Asian Spa services will be the strongest growth trend in the next
decade with over 80% of spas offering some form of Asian Spa service.
As mentioned on our Thai Spa page, when
considering a Spa vacation 19% of travelers prefer Indonesia as a
destination second only to Thailand at 22%.
Bali "Island of the Gods"
Its no wonder that Bali is called the "Island of the Gods" with its
beautiful gardens, lakes, rivers, beaches, and
lush forests where travelers are surrounded by art, ceremonies,
temples, celebrations, friendly people and smiles. The quality of life
in Bali is relaxed and graceful and it’s fitting that the Balinese
language has only one tense, the "ever present moment."
In Bali much
importance is given to respecting nature and creating beauty and harmony
and this is expressed not only in their art and beautiful surroundings
but also in their Balinese Massage, sumptuous body treatments and Jamu
rituals. With
over 200 spas scattered across Indonesia there is much to choose from.
What is Jamu?
Any discussion of Indonesian Spas necessitates an explanation of the now
ubiquitous Spa Buzz word “Jamu.” Although jamu has
most recently become associated with “Jamu massage” (actually Balinese
Massage) and traditional
“Jamu rituals” and body treatments, it actually encompasses an entire
centuries-old Indonesian healing tradition based on the use of natural herbal preparations made
from the leaves, roots, bark and flowers of Indonesia's abundant tropical forests.
To supply the
ingredients for jamu tonics and herbal preparations, approximately 1000
native plants are grown or harvested to make jamu and are used to treat
almost every ailment one can think of. In fact it is estimated
that 80% of all Indonesians
take some form of jamu daily. Young ladies called “jamu gendong” (jamu
-- herbal remedies, gendong -- meaning to carry on one's back) roam the
streets in traditional dress with their bottled jamu drinks strapped to
their backs and it is common for Indonesian spas to offer a "drink of
jamu" as a refreshing completion for their spa treatments.
However, the true
origins of jamu remain obscure. No one really knows its actual source;
however, popular folk stories link jamu to 17th century Indonesian aristocracy where ladies of
the palace prepared and used jamu herbal cosmetics to keep themselves
looking young and beautiful for their husbands. Up until the early 20th
century the jamu tradition was still exclusively practiced only among
aristocrat communities.
Jamu in Today's Top Spas
Of course jamu is not used for medicine only and provides the basis for
many beauty preparations in Indonesia and abroad. Spa-friendly jamu
spa rituals
are “the wave” among top destination spas in Indonesia and around the
world including some of the most exclusive resort and day spas in the
United States.

Royal
Javanese Treatment
The Javanese Lulur is an
ancient beauty treatment that was practiced in the palaces of Java
as a “purifying” ritual for Javanese brides for 40 days prior to
marriage. Today this same treatment is enjoyed by both women
and men for its ability to freshen and rid the skin of impurities
leaving the client with a soft golden glow (a product of the golden
color of the turmeric). The treatment usually begins with a
Javanese massage with aromatic oils and then flows into an
exfoliation scrub using the lulur recipe of turmeric, sandalwood,
rice power, cinnamon and other herbs and spices. A yogurt rub to
nourish the skin and a drink of Jamu herbal tonic while you are
relaxing completes the treatment.
