Sports
Massage, Basics Class
This course
offers the theoretical and practical foundations of Sports Massage in
an experientially-based learning environment. Massage therapists
who want to deepen their palpation and treatment skills, offer more
specific bodywork for their clients' acute or chronic pain, as well as
learn self-care techniques for themselves and their clients, will be
interested.
Sports Massage Topics include:
- Active Isolated and Active Assisted Stretching
- Types of massage and the timing of their use
with an athletic population including pre-event, post-event
and sports maintenance programs.
- Sport biomechanics
- Basic training principles
- Muscle soreness
- Injury prevention
- Benefits of massage
- Massage theory and application
Students will
find the information and skills applicable to both
athletes and non-athletes alike.
While the days are highly structured, they are designed to optimize
students' learning and comprehension in a fun and supportive
environment. Class
time will be divided between daily stretching routines, anatomy
review, Sports Massage theory, massage demonstration, practicing
technique and deepening
skills. Through discussion and questions, we will review
concepts and facilitate students' abilities to talk about the benefits
of Sports Massage Therapy. We will work on each other as well as
athletes from the community to optimize students' abilities and
confidence in working with an
active population.
Through
partnering exercises and games, we will explore movement, therapeutic
touch, communication, and deepen our class rapport.
Note: Students will be stretching everyday and should wear
clothing that will allow them to move freely. Because the days
are highly structured and filled with information, students are
encouraged to bring healthful snacks
to help optimize energy and focus.
