Kinesiology
Course Description:
Simply put, Kinesiology is the study of human movement. In-depth understanding of how muscles function as movers, antagonists, and stabilizers in the human body is critical to the clinical reasoning and assessment process as well as the application of advanced massage and bodywork rehabilitation techniques.
This advanced-level Kinesiology course provides an overview of clinical applications related to the concepts presented as well as an explanation of the anatomical and physiological terminology needed for work in the musculoskeletal field.
Advanced concepts taught, include the effects of micro-anatomy and physiology, as well as neurological affects on fascia in conjunction with human function, movement performance, and mobility.
Prerequisites: Anatomy: Bones & Muscles
Course Objectives: At the completion of the course, students will know and be able to:
• Describe actions of the head, neck, shoulder, scapula, elbow, wrist, hip, trunk, knee and ankle
• Identify the planes of motion & axes of rotation
• List the types of joints
• List the types of muscles
• Describe proprioceptors
• Compare & contrast active, passive, and manual resisted range of motion
• Describe the laws of kinesiology & principles of conditioning
• Describe the purpose and process of movement assessment
• Assess the functional range of motion at each joint/region
• Screen common functional movement patterns
• Understand the basic model of rehabilitation & therapeutic bodywork
