Prerequisites
No prior experience in bodywork is required.
Massage therapy is more than the application of techniques to the body. Every therapeutic interaction takes place within the context of a living nervous system — one that is constantly responding to touch, pressure, movement, environment, communication, and perceived safety.
This class explores how an understanding of the nervous system can deepen the way massage therapists approach touch, therapeutic presence, communication, and client care. Students will examine the nervous system, stress responses, neuroception, co-regulation, safety, sensory processing, boundaries, and the ways individual nervous-system responses can influence a client’s experience of massage.
Through lecture, observation, and experiential learning, students will learn to recognize observable signs of activation and settling without over-interpreting a client’s experience. Students will develop practical skills for working with greater curiosity, flexibility, and respect for the individual nervous system responses of both client and practitioner. They will explore how pressure, pace, rhythm, predictability, transitions, positioning, choice, and communication can influence the sensory and relational experience of touch.
The course emphasizes awareness over assumption and responsiveness over routine. Students will practice observing, asking, listening, adapting, and reassessing rather than relying solely on predetermined techniques or assumptions about what a client needs. Attention is also given to the therapist’s own nervous-system awareness, presence, physical effort, pacing, and boundaries.
Trauma is addressed as one context in which nervous-system responses may be especially significant, but the principles explored throughout the course apply to every client. Students will leave with a broader framework for understanding touch and practical tools for creating a massage experience that is more responsive, collaborative, and respectful of individual differences.
